Indeed, the grand and only use of examples, is to sharpen the judgement.
実際、実例の大きなかつ唯一の用途は、判断を鋭くすることである。
For as regards the correctness and precision of the insight of the understanding,
というのは、知性の洞察の正しさと厳密さに関しては、
examples are commonly injurious rather than otherwise,
実例はむしろ一般的に有害である。
because, as casus in terminis they seldom adequately fulfil the conditions of the rule.
なぜなら、術語の事例としては、それら（実例）が規則の条件を十分に満たすことは稀であるからだ。
Besides, they often weaken the power of our understanding to apprehend rules or laws in their universality,
その上、知性が特定の経験状況とは無関係に規則や法則の普遍性を理解する力を、実例は弱めてしまうことも多い、
independently of particular circumstances of experience;
and hence, accustom us to employ them more as formulae than as principles.
それゆえ、規則を原理としてよりも公式として使うことに我々を慣らしてしまう。
Examples are thus the go-cart of the judgement, which he who is naturally deficient in that faculty cannot afford to dispense with.
このように、実例は、判断力が自然に欠如した者には手放すことのできない、判断力の歩行器なのである。

実例（examples）が、ある術語の事例としてぴったりくることはなかなかないし、元々の規則の厳密性から外れてしまうこともあるかもだけど、それでも判断力の足りない人には、実例の提示は、判断力の歩行器（赤ちゃんがつかまって歩く車）の役割のように助けになるもの、ってことかなぁ。
私はよく勘違いしたり常識が無かったりするので、仕事の時は上司に一つ見本を作ってもらいます。
そうすると、規則がわかりやすくなるんですよね。
